Fate, Time, and Language: An Essay on Free Will.David Foster Wallace, James Ryerson & Jay Garfield (eds.) - 2010 - New York, NY, USA: Columbia University Press.
In 1962, the philosopher Richard Taylor used six commonly accepted presuppositions to imply that human beings have no control over the future. David Foster Wallace not only took issue with Taylor's method, which, according to him, scrambled the relations of logic, language, and the physical world, but also noted a semantic trick at the heart of Taylor's argument. _Fate, Time, and Language_ presents Wallace's brilliant critique of Taylor's work. Written long before the publication of his fiction and essays, Wallace's thesis (...)

  4. Rethinking business ethics: a pragmatic approach.Sandra B. Rosenthal - 2000 - New York: Oxford University Press. Edited by Rogene A. Buchholz.
Using classical American pragmatism, the authors provide a philosophical framework for rethinking the nature of the corporation--how it is embedded in its natural, technological, cultural, and international environments, emphasizing throughout its pervasive relational and moral dimensions. They explore the relationship of this framework to other contemporary business ethics perspectives, as well as its implications for moral leadership in business and business education.

American philosophy and the romantic tradition.Russell B. Goodman - 1990 - New York: Cambridge University Press.
Professional philosophers have tended either to shrug off American philosophy as negligible or derivative or to date American philosophy from the work of twentieth century analytical positivists such as Quine. Russell Goodman expands on the revisionist position developed by Stanley Cavell, that the most interesting strain of American thought proceeds not from Puritan theology or from empirical science but from a peculiarly American kind of Romanticism. This insight leads Goodman, through Cavell, back to Emerson and Thoreau and thence to William (...)

De Anima 2. 2–4 and the Meaning of Life.Gareth B. Matthews - 1992 - In Martha C. Nussbaum & Amélie Oksenberg Rorty, Essays on Aristotle's de Anima. Oxford, GB: Oxford University Press UK.
This essay constructs a picture of the meaning of life based on De Anima 2. 2-4. It shows that there are organisms that preserve their form through the exercise of identifiable functions. For an individual to be a short, living thing is for it to be one of these naturally species-preserving organisms. For an individual living thing to be actually living is for it to be able to perform one of the psychic or living functions appropriate to its species.

Deweyan Democracy and the Rawlsian Problematic: A Reply to Joshua Forstenzer.Robert B. Talisse - 2017 - Transactions of the Charles S. Peirce Society 53 (4):579.
For over a decade I have been arguing that Deweyan democracy fails an intuitive test for political legitimacy.1 According to this test, a political order can be legitimate only if the principles underlying its most fundamental institutions are insusceptible to reasonable rejection. Crucially, reasonable functions here as a technical term; a principle is reasonably rejectable when its rejection is consistent with embracing the ideal of a constitutional democracy as a fair system of social cooperation among free and equal moral persons.
